Eco Schools Status and Supporting Future School Events

The school has gained three Eco Schools Flags and we are now gearing up to achieve the fourth and final Platinum Award during the next academic year. We held an exhibition to celebrate and chart our journey so far on the 19th of June during our Open Classroom Evening and we were really pleased that so many of you came along to have a look. However, our work in this area is not just about getting flags and awards; more we want to change to the habits and mindset so that our children can grow up and enjoy all the things that we have enjoyed about this our fantastic world. Last year for the first time 40% of the human race used more of the world's resources than can ever be replaced. We are facing a global animal extinction event which has lead David Attenborough to describe humanity as a plague on the Earth. We've heard so much about plastic pollution but let's not forget that our thirst for energy is causing changes to our climate which will have a detrimental impact on world food production. How much food do we all throw away each week? Scientists across the world think we really are reaching a tipping point and if we don't start to Respect our world our disrespectful activities will make these changes irreversible. We can however, make some changes if we all come together and do our bit.

This is sports day and fete season. We'll be providing refreshments but from now on please bring your own cups, mugs and bottles. Please don't drop any litter - please take it home with you and recycle it.

Our Bag2School collecion made a fantastic £72.00. Thank you to everyone who brought in a bag - not only have we made some money for our school but you've also done a little bit more to protect our environment. Remember, when you reduce, reuse and recyle you help to keep our world safe!

Croesty Primary School remained open today but despite this our children still managed to get some fun from playing in the snow. We went onto our field to avoid any slips on hard surfaces and made some giant snowmen. If was great to see the children working together; some of them had never made snowmen before and so they learnt how to roll and shape the snow for the first time.

Our Choir took part in a very special concert this evening along side the choirs from seventeen other local schools and the wonderful African Children's Choir from Uganda. As part of the 'JUST AS I AM' Hymns Tour the combined choirs wowed a packed St David's Hall.

We'd like to pass on our congratulations to all of our singers and a very big thanks to Mrs Emma John our choir leader who has been working so hard with our children and who has enabled them to take part in such exciting events. We also like to thank Mrs Spratt, Mrs Rogers and Mrs Brisley who've helped out with all of our events this year.

Finally we hope that this evening's concert has been successful in raising money for the orphans of Uganda - the performance of the African Choir this evening was truly inspirational! 

We had a very good turnout of thirty six parents and grandparents for our Learning Share Event in Year 4 this afternoon. To start the event off the children performed some of their play scripts. The children then shared their learning related to the topic on Medieval Life and castles and parents were able to see the children’s model making with salt dough, weaving, stained glass windows and paintings of castles. Finally the children staged a puppet show for parents in our school library.

Here's a chance to reduce, reuse and recycle with our Bags2School Collection. Fill your bags with any unwanted clothing and leather items. It's an opportunity for an early spring clear out that will generate some much needed funds for Croesty Primary School.

Please bring in your bags on the day of collection:

and leave them outside our junior gate for the start of the school day.

Unfortunately we will not accept any bags before the day of collection because we have nowhere to store them.

Imogen in Year 6 has been appointed by the School Council to be our School Photographer this year and she will be assisted by Joe in Year 5. Seven children applied for the job and the School Council shortlisted three children to be interviewed. All three children who were interviewed today gave a fantastic account of themselves and why they felt they would make a good school photographer. The School Council then asked the three children to take three portrait shots on the school camera. They had to catch the character of their subject. This was the ultimate test and the council were amazed at just how well each photographer set up their portrait shots. They had to do this on the spot using a camera that they had never used before. However, this did not phase any of the three applicants who calmly got on with the job and they really tested the decision making skills of the interview panel.

I wonder how many adults would have coped so well in such a situation and as the only adult observer there I was very impressed with the candidates and the interview panel - they've experienced a real life interview process. Take a look at the candidate photographs!

Mrs Sian John will be leaving us at the end of  this week to start a new full time role with Maesteg Comprehensive school after Christmas. Mrs John has been a class teacher with us since 2005 and over that time she has worked in many of our Junior Classes from year 3 to year 6. Mrs john currently works with our Year 3 class on Thursdays and Fridays. We wish her every success in her new role.

Dr Wyatt Archaeologist came to work with Year 4 this week exploring aspects of medieval life with our children. Year 4 have made a study of life in Medieval times this term finding out about the events of 1066 using evidence sources like the Bayeux Tapestry and making visits to Cardiff Castle and the Medieval Village at Cosmeston.
